Gambling related self-exclusion
From 1 May 2005, all gambling providers have a duty to exclude (or ban) a patron when the patron requests to be self-excluded.
If you believe that you need to exclude yourself from a venue(s) then you should be aware that:
- you can seek assistance to self-exclude either at the venue or at your local Gambling Help Service
- if you approach the venue they will provide you with information about your nearest Gambling Help Service provider
- you will be required to complete some documentation for the venue (a ‘Self-Exclusion Notice’)
- you may be able to elect to be excluded from the whole venue or just from the gaming areas (this will depend on the venue)
- you have 24 hours to change your mind (if you do change your mind you must inform the venue within the 24 hour period)
- self-exclusions remain in place for five years and cannot be revoked within 12 months of first being initiated, unless a revocation order is submitted in the 24 hour cooling off period
- to have the self-exclusion order revoked after 12 months you must complete a ‘Revocation Order’ to have it lifted
- there are penalties if you breach an exclusion order (the venue is required to remove you from the premises and you may be prosecuted).
Need more information?
If you would like more information on self-exclusion you can talk to someone at your local venue or you can contact your local Gambling Help Service (PDF 100 K).
Hotel, club and casino have brochures on exclusions which provide further information. Ask your local venue for a copy.
A copy of the Self-Exclusion Notice (PDF 70 K) form and a flowchart of the Self-Exclusion process (PDF 40 K) are available for download.
