After the beep video and facilitator's guide

After the beep tells the story of a young college student whose life is affected by a heavy gambler.

The Responsible Gambling Council of Ontario, Canada, has kindly granted permission for After the beep to be included in the Responsible Gambling Teaching Resource Kit.

ABC CD 1: The Triple J Morning Show - Report on Gambling

The Triple J Morning Show broadcast a report about gambling on Friday 22 August 2003. This broadcast has been made available on a CD in the Responsible Gambling Teaching Resource Kit.

The report includes interviews with:

  • a problem gambling expert
  • an educator who discusses responsible gambling education
  • young people who talk about their gambling problems
  • young people who have been affected by relatives with gambling problems.

ABC CB 2: ABC Radio National - Life Matters

In 2002 the ABC's Radio National program Life Matters with Geraldine Doogue ran a series of segments on problem gambling. Two of these segments are included on a CD in the Responsible Gambling Teaching Resource Kit.

The segments are:

  • The fall of the dice, part 1 - Tony (broadcast Monday 25 March 2002). Tony talks about his gradual fall into debt as a result of his gambling, to the point where he embezzled more than a million dollars from a finance company.
  • The fall of the dice, part 2 - Adolescents and gambling (broadcast Tuesday 26 March 2002). Recent North American surveys have shown that over 80% of teenagers have gambled - with up to 8% of teenagers being problem gamblers. Unfortunately a growing body of evidence is revealing that the Australian scene may not be any better.

School Stuff

As well as being available online, copies of the School Stuff websites are included in the Responsible Gambling Teaching Resource Kit on CD ROM.

'Blow up the pokies' by The Whitlams

The Whitlams have kindly granted permission to the Queensland Government for the use of their track 'Blow up the Pokies' in the Responsible Gambling Teaching Resource Kit.

All copyright charges were donated to the Patrick Rafter Cherish the Children Foundation on behalf of The Whitlams and the Queensland Government.

ABC Video

A video tape of four television programs dealing with gambling is included in the Responsible Gambling Teaching Resource Kit. These programs were originally aired by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Enough Rope

Andrew Denton talks to Elena Svensson to break down prejudices about the homeless. Elena had a partner and was studying social work in Adelaide before being diagnosed with diabetes. She talks about how her addiction to gambling led to the loss of her partner and to her living on the streets.

This report discusses a study by LaTrobe University showing that mobile phones are the main reason for youth debt.

People Dimensions

This report on problem gambling incudes interviews with a former gambler, her daughter and husband, a psychologist and a counsellor. It focuses on the effects of problem gambling on the family unit.
