Responsible Gambling Teaching Resource Kit
The Responsible Gambling Teaching Resource Kit contains a range of modules, idea sheets and resources to help teachers implement responsible gambling education in the classroom. The resources are most suited to students in the middle and senior phases of learning.
The Responsible Gambling Teaching Resource Kit was released in October 2004 and distributed for free to schools throughout Queensland. Mathematics modules and supplementary materials were distributed to Queensland schools in late 2006.
Activities from the Teaching Resource Kit can also be incorporated into resiliency or lifeskills programs.
The Responsible Gambling Teaching Resource Kit contains eight Idea Sheets which provide brief thematic units that support the implementation of responsible gambling education in the classroom across a range of Key Learning Areas and subjects:
- The games we play (PDF 160 K) asks students to consider what is meant by the term 'gambling' and the impact that media and technology have played in changing games.
- As time goes by (PDF 155 K) provides students with information to look at gambling throughout the ages and the history of gambling in Queensland.
- Bully bookies (PDF 270 K) allows students to investigate gambling within the context of health, linked with the issue of bullying and peer pressure.
- Youth media campaign (PDF 355 K) asks students to deconstruct media texts that advertise gambling, decode the messages conveyed by this type of advertising and design a youth-focused media campaign.
- Dial a debt (PDF 155 K) gives students the opportunity to investigate the ease with which people can lose track of their spending through easy access to credit and a lack of understanding about charges associated with mobile phones and SMS.
- Gaming machines are big business (PDF 175 K) explores some of the common myths and misconceptions surrounding electronic gaming machines. It gives students opportunities to understand how popular culture and music are used as marketing devices to attract gamblers.
- Voices (PDF 145 K) encourages students to explore different perspectives and viewpoints surrounding the issue of gambling.
- Responsible gambling Melbourne Cup style (PDF 320 K) helps students develop a greater understanding of the Melbourne Cup and its place in Australia's cultural identity.
The Responsible Gambling Teaching Resource Kit also includes:
- Subject Area modules
- Resource sheets
- overhead transparencies
- support documents.
The Subject Area Modules have been designed for:
- Health and Physical Education levels 5 and 6
- The Arts level 4
- Study of Society and Environment level 3
- Mathematics levels 3, 4, 5, 6 and Senior Maths A and B.
