Trading hours
Trading hours are dictated by the type of liquor or wine industry licence held. Standard trading hours allow for liquor to be served at any time from Monday to Sunday, between the hours of 10:00 am and 12:00 midnight.
If extended trading hours are required (for any licence type) a separate application must be lodged, detailing how the extended hours are in the public interest.
Regardless of trading hours permitted by each licence, on Good Friday and Christmas Day, liquor may only be served during ordinary (not extended) hours, and only in conjunction with a meal, in an area ordinarily used for dining.
The Liquor Act 1992 requires that trading hours be displayed. However, the licensee is able to open and close at any time during this period.
The Act does not require that licensed premises remain open to the full extent of their trading hours. This is left to the discretion of management.
Anzac Day trading
From Anzac Day 2006 RSL Clubs and all licensed premises catering for RSL services or functions on Anzac Day will be entitled to commence trading from 5am on Anzac Day as part of their ordinary trading hours. They do not need to apply for a permit to do this.
A licensee may apply for an extended hours permit to trade from 5am-1pm on Anzac Day if the licensee has entered into an agreement with an RSL or Services Club to sell liquor under the permit at an Anzac day event for the club. The RSL club may be licensed or unlicensed, but if they are having the event at another licensed premises then there needs to be an agreement between the club and the licensee holding the event.
All other licensees must not trade before 1pm on Anzac Day, unless supplying liquor in conjunction with a meal in an area normally set aside for dining. In this circumstance liquor can be supplied from 10am or other such time approved by the Chief Executive.
Patrons are allowed onto hotel and club premises from 12 noon on Anzac Day for the purpose of using PubTAB and ClubTAB facilities, providing no liquor is served before 1pm.
