About Us

As a result of machinery-of-Government changes effective 26 March 2009, the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing is now a part of the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation.

 

The Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing (OLGR) is responsible for:

promoting the economic development of the liquor industry within a socially responsible framework

Liquor regulation includes key roles in developing a contemporary liquor and hospitality industry as well as regulate the sale and supply of liquor in Queensland through:

  • Issuing liquor, wine and adult entertainment licences and permits.
  • Investigating complaints about licensed premises and ensuring industry compliance with liquor and wine legislation.
  • Implementing initiatives to minimise harm and prevent crime associated with the consumption of liquor including support of Responsible Service of Alcohol programmes.
  • Working in partnership with Indigenous communities to implement Alcohol Management Plans and minimise the negative impacts of alcohol abuse and misuse.

maintaining the integrity and probity of the gambling industry in Queensland and ensuring that, on balance, the state and the community benefit from gambling

Gambling regulation conducted by OLGR encompasses:

  • The regulation of casinos, charitable gambling, gaming machines, interactive gambling, keno, lotteries and wagering.
  • Regulatory activities include licensing premises and persons, investigating complaints, conducting prosecutions and ensuring industry compliance with gambling legislation.
  • OLGR also administers community benefit funds and manages various responsible gambling programs.

maintaining public confidence in the integrity of the Queensland racing industry

Racing oversight includes:

  • Maintaining a policy and regulatory framework to manage and regulate the Queensland racing industry.
  • Ensure that the racing of animals, upon which betting is lawful, is conducted to the highest standards of integrity by all persons involved in racing or betting, and that the welfare of all animals involved is protected.

Major clients and stakeholders

In delivering these services, officers of the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing work closely with:

  • Liquor, Gaming and Racing industry associations
  • Licensees, permittees and their staff
  • Applicants for licences and permits
  • Community groups and individuals affected by the sale and supply of liquor and gambling activity
  • Other government/regulatory control bodies.
